The Lanzarote lure fishing research trip started with the complex process of obtaining a Lanzarote fishing licence. It takes hours as you have to visit four government departments in two locations and one bank.

On the first evening we fished an easy to access mark and got introduced to the notorious Lizardfish. Catching the first few was interesting but they soon became an annoyance. For the LRF enthusiast Lanzarote would be a great location with lots of small species ready to take a soft lure.

On the first and second day we headed west in the search of Bluefish and started fishing at 6am. We knew we had chosen a good mark as a few local lure fishers arrived at roughly the same time. Bluefish lived up to their reputation as a hard fighting and very aggressive predator. The wind was unusually strong and the surf got dangerous with all of us getting soaked. We later learnt just how dangerous the west coast can be. Sadly a number of lure fishermen had lost their lives in the last year. I’d advise tourists for their own safety to stay away from the west coast.

I’d like to thank the Spanish and expat lure fishermen who helped us with fishing techniques, tackle tips and fishing mark recommendations. Out of respect for these guys those marks won’t be written about here. As Martin has Spanish as a second language we got information from non-English speaking lure fishermen, tackle shop workers and commercial guys that gave us fast track insight into what was going on.
