Plugging for Bass

Posted by Lure Fishing for Bass on 9th Sep 2014

What follows is an overview of what to expect if you join one of the Lure Fishing for Bass daytime plugging trips.

Who: These trips are suitable for those with some lure fishing experience, wanting to catch bass on hard plastic lures. The fish are small, but the numbers can be large. If you like catching bass on the surface then this is the trip.

Boat: We fish from a small centre console boat.

Marks: Inshore sandbanks and sandy coastline inaccessible to shore anglers. Fishing depth is only 1m to 5m. If we see birds diving on bait fish we move to where the action is.

The Bass: Small bass are what to expect in these calm shallow waters. Larger bass do get caught, but 2lb is a good fish at these shallow marks in the daytime.

C&R: Bass are 100% catch & release by law at these locations.  When the tide is dead we may try for other species such as Mackerel which you can take and eat. If you’re interested in this please bring like metal lures or mackerel feathers.

Lures: A variety of surface and shallow diving lures such as IMA Komomo, Daiwa Shoreline Shiners, IMA Salt Skimmers and other quality hard plastic lures between 6cm > 14cm lures are perfect.

We may also fish some very fast and deep water so having a few heavy sinking lures such as 40g-60g or even heavier Fiiish, Savagear Sand eels or similar sinking lures is advisable.

Tackle Hire: We don’t rent tackle as our trips are aimed at people with at least some lure fishing experience.

Clothing: As the boat is open you’ll be totally exposed to wind and rain. A 100% waterproof hooded coat is a must. Finding your your coat is only 99% waterproof really sucks when the boat is miles from the harbour. If rain is forecast then waterproof trousers and boots are wise. It’s always colder as sea than on land so please bring extra layers. Sunglasses, sun cream and a hat will be needed even on overcast days.

Safety: A life jacket will be provided and must be worn at all times. The biggest risk is getting hooked when unhooking bass or by someone else casting. We will guide you on how to cast safely and recommend barbless hooks and not casting overhead.  A side cast will do the job and reduces the chance of accidents.

Storage: As the boat is small please limit your gear to on rucksack and one rod. We have a backup travel rod and reel in case yours gets damaged.

Disclaimer: By attending these trips you agree the organiser has no liability related to any injury or tackle damage during or related to this bass fishing trip. Including but not limited to drowning, slipping, getting cold, being hooked, cut or other accident.

Photography: Lure Fishing for Bass will unless requested, may take photos and potentially use those images on our blog or social media.  You may request any images to be removed.

Fun: Laughing and banter and not compulsory, but advised.
