Fly Dropper

Posted by Lure Fishing for Bass on 19th Jul 2014

fly dropper used in front of a bass lure can be used when lure fishing for bass to increase the numbers of bass caught.

Although not proven, many bass lure fishermen believe a fly dropper looks like a little bait fish being chased by the lure. This has the effect of a bass either taking out your lure, or if it’s a smaller bass it may try and take the fly (bait fish) before your lure.  If you fish through a shoal you’ll often get double hook-ups.

When the bass fishing is slow a fly dropper gives you the chance to catch other species including Mackerel, Scad, Pollack, Garfish, Gurnard and Bream depending on the depth you’re fishing at.

The most commonly used bass flies are the clouser minnow or lefty's deceiver.  All colours work but for the best results use a light coloured fly in low light conditions and a darker fly the brighter the sun.

Tips:

  1. Use a surgons knot to tie a length of monofilament about 30cm above your lure.
  2. The monofilament for the dropper should be heavier than your leader.  This will reduce or eliminate tangles.
  3. Attach the fly using a non-slip mono knot.

This method can be used fishing bass lures on the surface sub-surface or when jigging shads off the bottom.
