Lure fishing for Bass
Welcome to my website and blog for lure fishing for European Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)
New Year’s Day Double
January 3, 2012
What can I say, had a fantastic New Year’s day out fishing with Mark and Graham HK, fishing during winter for bass can be hard and you don’t expect to catch especially when most of the coast is blown out.
Thanks to Mark and despite the conditions we found the fish but none of us where ready for the results.
We had tried a few spots but none of them had inspired us with confidence, so we stopped for some breakfast and headed off to another that we hoped would produce. We all took one look at the sea state and thought, yes, this looks good. Their was a decent swell smashing into the rocks and the water clarity was good, not crystal clear but certainly not coloured. Mark stated, this is it lads, we’re not leaving here.
Pushing on along the rock markĀ I hooked into a bass that felt reasonable but I failed to keep in contact with it as a large wave washed it in and past me, I could see it looked half decent, maybe 4 or 5 pounds but as soon as I had that quick glimpse she was gone. I looked around but Mark and Graham where out of sight so I cast out again.
Bang fish on, this felt like a good one, it started taking line surging up tide with savage head knocks pulsating through the rod, I knew I didn’t want to loose it. After a decent fight I managed to get the bass to the boulders in front of me and as a large wave came in I made my move and guided by the rod the wave deposited a fantastic bass at my feet.

Measuring 76cm on the bass tape, this was a well fed bass with a massive head and an impressive girth. An easy double for sure.
The Zonk 120 in pearl rainbow did the trick, she certainly wanted that lure.

The release, not easy in the conditions
After all the excitement it was time for another cast, you guessed it, another hit (three in row, not bad)
This bass made some storming runs down tide, it wasn’t easy to move from my position, so I had to bully the bass back against the tide. Result, bass number two landed and measuring in at over 6lbs.
A few more casts resulted in a 2 pounder, all bass came to the Megabass Zonk 120, it’s a great lure for rough conditions and I certainly love the pearl rainbow. Didn’t bother with a pic for this one, it was really pissing down by this time, not that it bothered me after my dunking, luckily I was saved from being washed in, cheers Graham.
So a fantastic start to the New Year, it’s not going to be easy to try and better that in 2012 but at least I have a whole year ahead of me to try.

Adrian,,
Brilliant report and well done to you guys superb fishing
a new years day never to be forgotton,,,
well done mate we will nail a few more before 2012 is out
gee
Awesome result given the conditions on the day. Well done to you and to Mark in persevering to find a spot where fish were within reach of you’re lures.
Three fish on ‘day one’..now that’s the way to start 2012 !?!?
Nice one mate! Cracking pics!
Adrian good parts, that Zonk is great, it’s a lure that has brought me but not many catches, I always liked a lot.
Greetings.
Manel.
Lovely, lovely few fish Adrian!! Big congrats! Great start to the year! Hope you’re well.
Great fishing Joe.
That will teach me not to turn up.
Super fishing Adrian… big well done on the double!
Nice 1…. on my stomping grounds i see…
well mate , welcome to the doubles club, theres local blokes down here been trying for years to join it (on bait as well ) on a lure, its a heck of a fish mate, blown away for you, one hell of a year ahead now.
Very very hard to catch a UK double on a lure, its not pi@s easy Ireland over here (is it tom or gee lol )
1st of many for you mate. top marks , 10/10
Good on ya guys, that spot does look very familiar. Ive never had much luck there for the bass.. had some cracking pollock off those rocks in the late evenings though.

Not a lot of people do that well for bass up there .
As you say its prob more suited to pot bait fishing .
But on its day , in the right conditions , and knowing when where and why , its a top spot .
Thats why bass only for me works , i would hate to be side tracked , trying to catch , crappy pot bait fish , to just get a bend in a fairys wand .
Ps , a fairys wand , would not have worked up there , as at least a 60m plus cast is needed always .
That may well be your bass less problem up there .
Still , its a great spot for wrasse , and pollock , as you say . If your into that type of fishing , as i was as a kid .
Congratulations on a clonking fish, fish of a lifetime for mny anglers. Testement to getting out and fishing while the rest of us were nursing hangovers lying in bed
