Lure fishing for Bass
Welcome to my website and blog for lure fishing for European Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)
Ireland trip – October
November 22, 2011
The thought of letting October pass without a trip to Ireland was just not going to happen, so with a call to Graham, a quick chat, we had the ferry booked. Mark as ever wasn’t very organised and neither Graham or I where totally convinced he was coming until we meet up with him at Steve’s house where we all stopped for a chin wag with Steve who was on his way over to Jersey the next day to fish the comp.
We arrived at Rosslare early the next morning and as usual raced straight onto one of Graham’s marks to fish the tide down. What can I say within an hour or so of landing in Ireland I was already hooked into a decent fish.

74cm Bass taken on a Megabass Zonk Gataride in Pear Rainbow
Pushing along the rocks I was keen to have a cast at some boulders that seem to hold the odd decent bass, there was a little bit of localised colour in the water at this spot so I clipped on a Megabass Zonk Gataride and cast out toward the structure, two turns of the handle and BANG fish on. It wash’t the best fight I’ve had from a bass but measuring in at 74cm I certainly wasn’t disappointed.

Double hookup, Mark just checking he’s caught the bigger one.
We had several more bass that session, including a double hook up for Mark and me. A good start to say the least.

I have no idea what Mark was taking, but he found this hat in the house we where renting…
Topping was proving to be the name of the game when we tucked ourselves away in some back waters. Mark was doing some serious damage with the Lucky Craft Gunfish 115 in Ghost Minnow. Graham was enjoying success with a River2Sea Rover 98 flashing plate Ghost which he’d picked up on holiday in Turkey. The Zenith Z-Claw Original, #SW04, mullet was proving successful for me.
Another for Graham, released to fight another day, as were all the bass we caught.
More fish of the top, Mark caught this beauty after I’d pointed out a disturbance behind him, what a great fight, a few quick photos and Mark cast again in the same area, this time the water erupted and his drag screamed as a large bass powered off up tide. Wow, but then came the head shakes and she was gone, hard to say how large that bass was but a potential double for sure.
The one that didn’t get away.
Much to my surprise the night before, when sorting out some kit I found a Lucky Craft Gunfish 115 in Ghost Sunfish colour in one of my spare lure boxes, I knew I had one but I thought it was back at home. The next morning Graham and I where straight back on the toppers and obviously I hooked the Gunfish on first thing.
There’s something about the Gunfish, on it’s day I don’t think there is a better topper.
Graham had another nice one of the top and we moved on, we both stopped for a quick break and decided it was time to try a few shads and Xlayers drifted down in the current. One last try with the Gunfish though and within two casts I got smashed by the bass below.
Another for the Gunfish
When we thought it was all over Graham gave me a little master class in how to fish the shads, some great fishing and I can’t wait to get back over to Ireland.
Graham with a shad caught beauty.

As always, top dangling!
Great pics and fish caught.
Nice pictures, and beautiful catches.
Mark is a bit like Benny Hill, right? x))
Greetings from Asturias to the whole group.
A successful trip for sure Richard.
Manel your right, just like Benny Hill, I can see him now chasing a group of girls with that music.
There’s some lovely fish there, top report – very envious!
Good stuff.
heel mooi om zulke vissen te vangen en weer vrij te laten. KLASSE!!!!
