Calm between the storms

June 6, 2010

So sometimes you just need to go fishing, you know the small tides aren’t the best and the weather may not be suitable but the urge to go can be all consuming. I’d had my eye on the forecasts for Sunday morning and with the promise of the wind swinging around to the South West I thought there may be a realistic chance of catching. The only problem was the forecast SW wind was also going to blow in a series of thunder storms, so we settled on a 5.30am forecast check but before I could even get to bed heavy cloud had rolled overhead and unleashed buckets of rain accompanied by plenty of lightning and thunder.

I was conscious of more storms throughout the night but was pleasantly surprised in the morning to find that they had blown through and with the current forecast we would be fishing after all. We arrived at the mark and conditions looked great, water clarity was excellent, we had cloud cover, it was fairly warm and there was a small swell on an otherwise calm sea.

I was keen to try the Daiwa morethan X-cross 120SSR-F (See here) that I’d recently purchased and this was one of the marks I thought it would be useful on, lots of snags and shallow water mean you can only use surface lures or very shallow divers. This lure has a very exaggerated wide wobbling action but it looks fluid and only the IMA Komomo 2, that I know off, swims this shallow. Anyway I managed to pic up a couple of Bass, nothing massive, but great fun all the same and I now have another confidence lure.

On the way home as the heavens opened again I had to smile, I will fish in rain especially if there’s a good chance of catching, but waving an 9 foot carbon rod around during a thunder storm isn’t the best idea and considering the session was completely dry and a few bass had jumped on my lure what more could you ask of a Sunday morning.
