Lure fishing for Bass
Welcome to my website and blog for lure fishing for European Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)
Asturias, Spain
February 22, 2011
Having spent a long weekend with Graham, Mark, Tom & Stu in Asturias, Spain I’m finding it hard to think of a fishing holiday where I’ve had a better time. This region of Spain is very different to the parts of Spain you may have visited on holiday, the coastline is stunning with lush green grass and tree covered hills that abruptly end with massive cliffs leading down to surf beaches with extensive rock fields at either end, the scale of the place is insane. This has got to be some of the hardest bass ground out there.
I was lucky to snag a bass early the first morning, and what a great hard fighting fish it was too. Once landed we found out it was a male fish weighing over six pounds and measuring 67cm, what a start.

Tom doing the (no) grin and hold of my fish for me…
Here’s some of the stunning cliffs and reefs.
Mark managed another bass of the beach, but we all came to the conclusion that we may need some help.
Graham is in the photo above, he’s just a dot in the landscape with the picture at this size.
That evening we called Manel, who had previously emailed when he found out from Graham’s blog that we were heading over to Asturias, and much to our surprise within 10mins he was knocking on the door. What can you say, it amazing how bass fishing can bring people together, that someone who we had never meet came around and offered to take us out and show us his marks and guide us for the next two days is incredible.
Daruis (left) and Manel (right)
We didn’t only get one local guide but two and the ground that Darius and Manel showed us was something special. I think it’s true to say that we all learnt a lot from each other talking and looking at each others equipment and techniques and Tom did a wonderful job as head translator supported by Mark and his dubious mime acts that left everyone laughing but no one any the wiser.
Our new friends certainly didn’t take themselves too seriously and fitted right in, fishing hard and playing hard.
When viewing the photo above you have to take into account how far away I was, the swell was massive and and the waves they produced were something else.
Most of the photos are taken during our sunny spell, unfortunately most of the time the conditions dictated keeping the camera tucked away.
Tom giving it a go, you have to keep an eye open for the bigger waves…
Manel and Tom moving on to explore more ground..
So wether it was the conditions or that the fish where possibly preoccupied with breeding we didn’t land as many as hoped but we had a great time and made some new friends and look forward to heading over too this wonderful part of the world again. Hopefully Manel and Darius will come over to the UK to experience some of our fishing at some point this year.
You can see Manel’s blog here, and Manel’s video of what the sea conditions can be like on Asturias coast here.

What a great report on a fantastic weekend!
Any chance of putting Manels wave video up – it gives an idea of the swell down there (if not no worries).
Hasta la Vista !!
Great report and fantastic photos!
A pleasure for our coasts and our seabass your visit and your perspective.
Best regards
Fernando (Manel“s friend)

Hi Joe.
Good article and beautiful pictures.
It’s been a fantastic weekend, we missed more bass, a penalty, but the exchange of information has been incredible.
Hope to see you soon in England or Spain.
If work allows us We’ll be there, leave us some bass.
Hugs.
Hi Manel
You must try to come over. Thanks again for a great time, I really appreciate you guys taking the time to guide us around your fantastic coastline.
Tight lines.
Joe
Manel – I will be speaking to Mark at the weekend to look for some good tides…
No excuses – if you can climb those cliffs you cannot be scared of flying (Dario will hold your hand)
Manel – Voy a estar hablando con Mark en el fin de semana a buscar alguna buena mareas …
No hay excusas – si se puede escalar los acantilados no se puede tener miedo a volar (Dario tomar tu mano)
;o)

hello adrian, wondering if you can point me in the right direction to get shimano stella 4000xg 2010 or stella 4000 fd. many thanks karl.
I have to be honest I have no idea where to get the best deals on a Stella. I’m working along the lines of using cheaper reels like the Rarenium and replacing frequently.
Ive just picked up a Stella FE (2011) for 500 euros from Germany (have a google about)
thanks guys, looking all the time and japan is always commin up,nay bloody good….
