Sebile Magic Swimmer – Soft 130

Sebile Magic Swimmer – Soft, SP25-Electric Rainbow

The Magic Swimmer Soft has an action to die for, to be honest on a straight retrieve it swims so well that it doesn’t really look like an injured bait fish. You get three in a pack with a custom hook already inserted into one, it’s a great quality hook and the idea is that once you have worn out one bait, you just chuck it and insert the hook into another one. There are hook holes in the bait so rigging is easy and a slot in the top to conceal the point of the hook so it works well in weedy areas, though suspended weed will still collect on the nose. You also get small rubberised weights to slide onto the hook, by mixing the amount you can adjust the weight of the lure and also by positioning the weights forward or towards the back of the hook you can effect how it swims and dives.

Xorus Sayori Shad

Sayori Shad1

Xorus Sayori Shad, colour – left: Shirasu (3) & right: Togoro (6)

With gales in November and the early onslaught of a hard winter, with all this snow, the Bass fishing seems to be over for another year. So what to do over the winter months, well as usual I’ll be on the look out for new lures and kit for the spring when the bass fishing kicks off again. New to me is the Xorus Sayori Shad it’s a cross between a stick bait and a paddle tail. Pictured above is the 120mm version, there’s also a giant version at 160mm.

As with the Rolling Shad I’ve coupled it with the Xorus Coyotte jig head (32g with 5/0 Decoy hook) which is designed to rapidly descend through the water column, which is great if your fishing deep water in a swell where fish may well be holding on the bottom. Also I’ve shown the Sayori rigged with a Xorus Rolling jig head (3og with 5/0 Decoy hook) it’s shape is supposed to help the rolling effect of soft plastics on the drop, especially the Xorus Rolling Shad, though it looks like it would be suitable for a variety of soft plastic baits. Time will tell with this one and I hope to give you more feedback once I’ve got to use it in anger.

Xorus Rolling Shad, colour: Ultima Iwashi (14)

The principle design feature of the Xorus Rolling Shad is it’s oversized tail which produces a strong vibration that can be felt right up to the rod even when there is little current. They come in three sizes, medium is 100mm long, large is 130mm long (pictured above) and Giant is 150mm long. I’ve coupled it with the Xorus Coyotte jig head (32g with 5/0 Decoy hook) which is designed to rapidly descend through the water column, which is great if your fishing deep water in a swell where fish may well be holding on the bottom.

Megabass Xlayer & Giant Xlayer

The Megabass Xlayer is a 100mm long stick bait with an aniseed scent and built in micro rattle, originally conceived to target bass lying in ambush in inaccessible places such as kelp beds and very rough ground it’s well suited to rigging ‘Texas’ style with jig heads such as the Owner Ultrahead Bullet Rig. Rigging the Xlayer weedless allows you to access areas where you wouldn’t dare cast a plug, in fact the very first time I used one in this style I hooked into a 5lb 7oz bass that had been concealed in some weed between some rocks not more than 3 metres away from me, in water little over a foot deep. Being only the 5th of April and my first bass of the year all I can say is, I was truly hooked. The fishing technique I use, when rigged in this style, is to simply to bounce it along the bottom.
