Lure fishing for Bass
Welcome to my website and blog for lure fishing for European Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)
Sea Mist
May 20, 2010
With the weather improving I decided to sneak out of work early today, I fully expected to be drenched in beautiful sunshine but when I arrived at the coast and looked down the cliff at the mark all I could see was a white blanket of mist. Strangely before I could get into place to fish a breeze had blown up and completely cleared the mist so I did enjoy some of that eagerly anticipated sunshine. It didn’t take long before I got a hit, thanks to the Feed Shallow 128 mullet, just a little fellow but he was full of beans and certainly put a smile on my face.
I switched to a Megabass Zonk 120 Gataride Yoro-Yoro, obviously not the Perl colour which I’ve been doing well with because I broke that the other day so I had to settle with the HT Sayori which to be honest looks the business. I love the way the Gataride’s cast, they have a very true flight, which I think is part of the reason why they go so far. After a few casts I got a sight of a bass sweep around a boulder and have a swipe at the lure, unbelievably he missed and few more casts got nothing so I moved on.

First bass, just a little fellow but he certainly knows how to protect himself.
As I scrambled along the rocks, the wind had dropped and the sea mist started to roll in again, by the time I reached the spot I wanted to try and had waded out as far as I could I found my self in my own little bass heaven, visibility allowed me to just see the sea and a few boulders around me, even the lure disappeared on the cast only to reappear out of the mist as it splashed down into the water. Conditions looked perfect, very fishy in fact I swear I could even smell that the bass where present, I put on the Tide Minnow 140 Flyer and fired it out into the misty void, a small pause allowing it to sink down and I started to work it back, BANG fish on, a great little scrap resulted in a decent three pounder, took a couple of pics and slipped him back in.
This photo doesn’t make the fish look very big but I love the way the water distortion enhances the sleek lines that bass have.
I fired the Tide Minnow out again, it’s quite a strange feeling balancing on a rock with no horizon visible and certainly a bit eerie hearing fog horns sounding off from different directions but my mind was soon focused back on the fishing with another good hit and another bass landed, still only just over the 3lb mark but as ever there’s always the hope of making contact with mum on the next cast.
Despite what seemed like perfect conditions I didn’t manage to locate any of the larger fish we had seen the last few times out, I managed to land another schoolie and decided to call it a day, not a bad session for a quick after work trip, four bass landed a miss and one that came off, already looking forward to my next session.
