Lure fishing for Bass

ima BarbarossA

ima BarbarossA, colour #010 Horse Mackerel
The ima BarbarossA is another lipless fluttering style minnow but with a slight difference, it does have some action on a steady retrieve. Unlike a lot of similar style baits this lure has an inline diving vane which I presume helps produce it’s slalom swimming action. Put in some twitches and you can see this lure come to life, though as ever, it’s all about what happens when you stop winding, as it sinks you get that fluttering, rolling and flashing action that seems to really encourage bass to hit.
I’ve already tried this lure on the open shore and right enough I caught a small bass on the third cast. What I’m really waiting for though is to try it in an estuary with a strongish current. The technique that ima claims this lure excels at is to cast it out into the flow, as the current takes it you get the sinking, fluttering, rolling and flashing action, then once it hits bottom or has descended as far as you dare start retrieving to bring it back towards the surface, then all you need to do is repeat, what they like to call “send it, drift it & sink it”.
Despite not having a casting system this lure really flies, helped undoubtedly by it’s heavy weight compared to it’s size, it has internal rattles and the finish looks really good though after limited use I can already see signs of treble wear.

Dorset’s firing…
September 8, 2010
I cant help but get excited about a trip down to Dorset after a few bass. The problem as ever is getting to sleep the night before, with thoughts of bass hitting surface plugs and wondering if I have everything I’ll need packed and ready to go even counting sheep doesn’t seem to help. Still the plan was to fish first light so I was up at 2.00am and out the door by 20 past, well a least at this time of night you shouldn’t get held up by traffic. You forget how driving can be quite therapeutic with a clear road ahead, the forecast of rain hadn’t materialised, so it was a question of choosing a speed and with the engine fully warmed and singing gunning it to the coast.
With still no sign of dawn Mark and I headed out, we have both found the Zonk to be a great lure when it’s dark, cast it out and let it rest, then a steady slow retrieve and let it rest again the vibration of it’s diving lip and the action it imparts on the lure being enough for any bass within the vicinity to easily locate it and hit it. On my third cast, expectations and hopes where put aside with a great hit and as my rod bent over into what was undoubtably a decent bass, you realise the early start and lack of sleep was worth it and we could be in for a good day.
