A few fish in Dorset

May 31, 2010

Decided to meet up with Mark down on the Dorset coast Friday night for a spot of rock hopping. The fishing started a bit slow despite me picking up a schoolie on the third chuck.

Not to be put off Mark knew where to try and as darkness started to fall and the ebb had just started to push, we positioned ourselves on a couple of boulders about 20 feet from each other ready to intercept a few. Well what can I say we had a frantic hour getting lots of hits and managing to land nine fish in total.

Mark with a nice 6lb 4oz bass which was the biggest for the evening, we thought for a moment that he’d hit a monster, the sound of the line being ripped from the spool against the drag whilst seeing the rod pulled over into a nice curve is what it’s all about, that and having a good laugh, which we certainly did.

Megabass X-140 SW

May 26, 2010

Megabass X-140 SW, #04 INAKKO (Baby Mullet)

I’ve never used the MegaBass X-120SW, though I had heard good things about it, but when the X-140 SW came out I couldn’t resist. Like all Megabass lures the finish is great and I particularly like this mullet colour, I’ve always done very well with the Feed Shallow 128 No. 11 (Mullet colour) and although this is a very different lure I’ve already had success with it, although they where only small bass I was experimenting because the fishing was slow, so I’m already impressed.

Described as having a High Pitch Rolling action I guess I’d have to agree, it’s not an exaggerated action, it’s tight, with not very much feedback through the rod but if you look at the lure in the water you’ll notice how well it shows it’s bottom, top and obviously sides on a simple retrieve which certainly looks attractive reflecting available light in a pulsating way. The lure casts really well, with a true flight and decent distance and swims at a useful depth of around half a metre.

Has Summer arrived

May 21, 2010

Out again this evening for an evening session with Tony and Graham, I think this is the first time this year that it was actually warm, the wind didn’t have that bitting chill to it and the forecast for the weekend looks even warmer. We hadn’t been fishing for too long and I got a hit on the Gataride, this fish put up a good scrap with lots of kiting runs, certainly a very fit fish and being hooked in the mouth and gill plate was able to dive away, I didn’t bother weighing her but at a guess about three and a half pounds maybe pushing four.

Sea Mist

May 20, 2010

With the weather improving I decided to sneak out of work early today, I fully expected to be drenched in beautiful sunshine but when I arrived at the coast and looked down the cliff at the mark all I could see was a white blanket of mist. Strangely before I could get into place to fish a breeze had blown up and completely cleared the mist so I did enjoy some of that eagerly anticipated sunshine. It didn’t take long before I got a hit, thanks to the Feed Shallow 128 mullet, just a little fellow but he was full of beans and certainly put a smile on my face.

I switched to a Megabass Zonk 120 Gataride Yoro-Yoro, obviously not the Perl colour which I’ve been doing well with because I broke that the other day so I had to settle with the HT Sayori which to be honest looks the business. I love the way the Gataride’s cast, they have a very true flight, which I think is part of the reason why they go so far. After a few casts I got a sight of a bass sweep around a boulder and have a swipe at the lure, unbelievably he missed and few more casts got nothing so I moved on.
